Warm Wishes!

December 12, 2022
By Megan Hakerem, Interim Head of School

Dear Families,

During this time of year, there’s a beautiful juxtaposition of the darkness of the winter solstice amidst vibrant light, a common element of many religious and secular traditions celebrated by our families. Earlier this fall, clay pots were lit during Diwali to signify the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. Jewish people will gather on the evening of December 18 to light the first candles of Hanukkah, an 8-day celebration commemorating the miracle of the oil found in a temple by the Maccabees that miraculously burned for eight days despite being only enough for one day. During the celebration of Kwanzaa, which begins December 26, candles are lit for seven nights to signify the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. And those who celebrate Christmas adorn trees and homes in light derived from the light of the Star of Bethlehem, which signified the place where Jesus was born.

We each carry a light, which serves to brighten the world around us. We strive each day to help our students discover how they will share their light with the world. As classes pause for Winter Break, I hope you enjoy the company of family and friends and know how grateful we are for the light your family brings to Springmont.

Warm wishes for a peaceful holiday and a happy and healthy new year,

Megan
