Rooted in Nature, Connected by Community: Reflections on the Landschool Work Weekend

September 28, 2026
By Springmont Parent Amy Senna

One sentiment I heard repeatedly throughout the Landschool Work Weekend was “I love watching the children play freely in nature.” There is something truly special about observing the organic experiences children gain simply from playing. The Landschool provides our children with generous and abundant opportunities that allow them to explore, follow their curiosity, take healthy risks, and connect with nature and each other. Having the Landschool as an extension of our Springmont community is an extraordinary gift and one that continuously leaves a lasting impression on those lucky enough to experience it firsthand.

Maria Montessori understood the profound relationship between children and the natural world. She believed that children need opportunities to move freely, follow their curiosity, make discoveries, and develop a meaningful connection with their environment. “The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.” – Maria Montessori, From Childhood to Adolescence

The Landschool Work Weekend was a beautiful reminder of just how interconnected nature, community, and well-being truly are. While our children were exploring, discovering, and experiencing the freedom of the outdoors,  the adults were working side by side toward a shared purpose. Through environmental stewardship, we were not only caring for the land but also strengthening our sense of belonging and connection to one another.
“The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences.” – Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind. The Landschool embodies this philosophy by giving children space to safely explore, develop confidence, strengthen friendships, and discover the natural world through organic, firsthand experiences. At the same time, it gives families the opportunity to slow down, absorb the many benefits of nature, and contribute to something deeply meaningful.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the weekend was recognizing that while we came together to care for a place, that very place nurtured us in return.
