News from the Art Studio: Monarch Migration

April 20, 2020
By Julie Strickland

For the past several years, Springmont has joined the Symbolic Migration project through Journey North who this past October delivered over 1,300 class Ambassador Butterflies originating from 44 states and the District of Columbia as well as Canada and Korea to more than 30 Mexican schools located around The Monarch Butterfly Bioreserve Sanctuary, El Rosario, in Michoacan, Mexico. Our five Elementary classes’ Ambassador Butterfly folders containing a class photo and letter in Spanish (thank you, Anabel!) as well as life-sized, origami butterflies created by each student were among those 1,300!

Over 28,000 students participated by creating life-sized butterflies, 106 of which were received by Springmont just after our Spring Break along with a few letters from Mexican students and emails from teachers who have received our students' butterflies. It was amazing to see where they came from! The final step in this symbolic migration will be when the Mexican students "release" their Ambassador Butterflies and they make their way back to us, hopefully by Cinco de Mayo.
