National Hispanic Heritage Month

Did you know that September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month? Rather than selecting a calendar month, the dates encompass the anniversaries of national independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua that all recognize September 15 as the date of their independence, while Mexico and Chile’s independence days are celebrated September 16 and September 18 respectively. The observation, started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, pays tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. Don’t miss today’s Bake Sale hosted by Nathalie’s Upper Elementary class! It’s the final one for this school year and students will soon be dropping off their Spring Semester proceeds to organizations of their choice. They will be selling rainbow swirl bread, blueberry loaves, and lime pound cakes in the Pavilion beginning at 3:15. Yum! Cash only, please!

It finally feels like spring, and Primary students are busy in classroom gardens! In addition to engaging young children’s innate sense of curiosity, wonder, and joy, gardening helps children develop an appreciation for the natural world and builds the foundation for environmental stewardship, mindsets essential to taking care of our planet!
