Maria Montessori's 150th Birthday Celebration
Today marks the 150th anniversary of Dr. Maria Montessori's birthday. Born August 31, 1870, in Chiaravalle, Italy, Montessori was a true pioneer, first training as a medical doctor before shifting her focus to working with children and developing the Montessori method. Montessori’s work in education spanned the course of both World War I and II, and her focus on education for peace and social reform lead to three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
While much of the celebration for Montessori’s birthday has been cancelled due to the pandemic, Montessori schools in more than 140 countries around the world are marking the day in their own ways. At Springmont, classes will tour a timeline of Dr. Montessori’s life and work including highlights from Springmont’s history. The timeline is hung on the Activity Court fence and will be on display all this week (weather permitting!). It will also be shared on Facebook. Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori!
