Elementary & Middle School Art & Music World Adventure!

September 26, 2022
By Julie Strickland

This year, Springmont’s Elementary and Middle School students have embarked on a worldwide art and music adventure! Led by Art Teacher Theresa Dean, Art Assistant Claire Tadeo, and Music Teacher Carissa Gibson, each student has created a Global Arts Passport that will document their year of “travel.”  Passports include a self-portrait, a travel journal, and a world map. Students will place a mark on their map and add a stamp in their Passport, just as one would when traveling abroad.

The goal of this endeavor is to build a culture of community and acceptance by seeking to understand, learn about, and connect with other cultures through art and music while exploring important elements and principles of the fine arts. Students will “visit” Africa, Central America & Mexico, South America, the USA & Canada, Asia, Oceania, and Europe. Each project will be centered around a culture, artist, or tradition from that region.

In September, students visited Africa. Upper Elementary students learned about Botswana and created a mixed-medium project centered around the cheetah; the example pictured here was created by Upper Elementary student Emily Benk. Middle School students are working on watercolor landscapes of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. We will share additional examples of our students' beautiful artworks on social media later this week. Lower Elementary students created miniature djembe drums from the country of Mali. They will be on display in the Main Office soon!
