Lower Elementary Students "Visit" Mali!

As part of the Global Arts Passport curriculum introduced in last week’s newsletter, Lower Elementary students have just finished their first unit of this exciting, year-long initiative. Their first stop was the continent of Africa, more specifically, the country of Mali. Djembe drums come from the Mali Empire and are a popular musical instrument that has held importance for many generations. Students learned about the making of djembe drums and the different sounds they can make. They created their own miniature versions of these drums, exploring color theory, pattern, and weaving along the way. Music heard in both the Art and Music Studios inspired the children to create their own rhythms on their finished pieces. A big thank you to Art Assistant Claire Tadeo for putting these on display in the Front Office - make sure to stop by to see these beautiful artworks! We will also post more photos on Facebook later this week.
