And the Winners Are...!

Last October, Springmont students began preparing for the 50th annual Georgia Book Awards. Established in 1968, the Georgia Book Awards were created to foster a love of reading in Georgia's children by introducing them to books of literary excellence. Awards are given in two categories – picture books and middle-grade novels - and books represent many genres: historical fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy and more. The books often raise cultural awareness and recognition of social issues such as bullying, civil and human rights, and poverty.
School Day Primary and Lower Elementary students heard all 20 of the picture book nominees read aloud in class. Upper Elementary students read as many of the 20 nominated novels as they could and a new, optional Lunch Bunch Book Club for Upper Elementary highlighted one book each month.
In early March, students across the state voted. Outstanding illustrations, the author’s style and important themes are examples of criteria students considered as they cast their votes. Springmont's votes were tallied and recorded on the Georgia Book Award website, and students anxiously awaited the announcement of the winners, A Dog Like Daisy and Not Quite Narwhal. Ask your child if his/her choice won!
