The Great Southeast Pollinator Census

As they have for the last several years, Springmont’s Elementary & Middle School students participated in The Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a citizen scientist project created by the University of Georgia. On Friday, small groups of students took turns identifying and counting the pollinators (including bees, flies, butterflies, and other insects) that visited a single plant during a 15-minute period. The information they recorded on their data sheets will be entered into the UGA website. In addition to learning more about pollinators, this effort allowed all participants to practice their observation skills and Middle Schoolers to exercise leadership skills. A big thank you to Outdoor Science Education Teacher Thomson Chuites for organizing this collaborative learning experience. Look for more photos on Facebook and Instagram!

On Friday, parents joined students in Brenda’s class garden for an afternoon of fall planting. Gardening is an important part of Springmont’s curriculum, allowing students to learn about botany, measuring, responsibility, patience, and more! Thank you to the parents who generously gave the Gift of Time! Sharing school experiences is a great way to show children that the adults in their lives value them and their education.

Springmont has visitors! Thirteen four-legged weed eaters from Glitzy Goats have been hired to clear the weeds and brush from the retention area behind the Elementary building. Eating for about 16 hours a day, each goat can consume about 10 lbs. of vegetation daily. Not only is this method more environmentally friendly and in keeping with our core value, Stewardship of the Environment, but it’s also cost-effective!
